Alright X- what's the story behind this statue again? Me and my friends found it a couple months ago, and it's honestly creeped out the majority of the people I've shown it to. And I'm not talking "Oh that's creepy" bullshit- I'm talking "Stay up all fucking night panicking over it."

Seriously- we sat up for a couple of hours just describing the way it would kill you. I remember the story attached vaguely- something about how it was a test subject locked in a room, it was never seen moving, and if you looked away from it, it would kill you by strangulation/breaking your neck.

Seriously /x/. Wtf? a
>> Anonymous
Some story about if you break vision from it, it kills you.

And drags shit and blood wherever it goes

And supposedly it's fast
>> Anonymous
Yeah, but I'm wondering if I can get the original story. Copypasta nice.

dont trying to be tough, because I aint. A wuss in fact. But that's not scary o_O its just an ugly statue. Ok, wouldnt wanna meet it in the middle of the night but still..

Item#: SCP-173
Special Containment Procedures: Item SPC-173 is to be kept in a locked container at all times. When personnel must enter SCP-173's container, no fewer than 3 may enter at any time and the door is to be relocked behind them. At all times, two persons must be looking at SCP-173 until all personnel have vacated and relocked the container.
Description: Moved to Site19 1993, little is known about item number SCM-173's origins. It is constructed from concrete and rebar and was once painted with Crylon brand spraypaint.
SCP-173 is animate and malevolent, if given the chance it will kill anyone within it's line of site. It's weakness however is that it does not move while being watched. Despite this paralysis it is still highly dangerous; able to cover at least 2 meters in the literal blink of an eye. It typicaly kills by either snapping the victim's neck from behind, or grabbing the victim's throat and strangling him. Whatever animates SCP-173 does not give it much force with which to break things, as seen above a large room with unbarred windows is fully capable of containing it. It's grip however is unbreakable, as when it is not moving the statue is as hard and strong as concrete.
While left alone in it's room, one can hear a stone-on-stone scraping from within that is believed to be the sound of the SCP-173 moving about.
The reddish brown substance on the floor is a combination of feces and blood. We don't know (nor wish to find out) where it comes from or how it arrives but SCP-173's container will slowly fill with these substances. In order to ensure that bacterial growth within does not begin to damage the building it is contained in, and to maintain some level of sanitation, the enclosure must be cleaned on a bi-weekly basis

I saw another version recently, which I prefer for the detail about blinking and the more coldly neutral way it's written:

"Item#: SCP-173
Special Containment Procedures: Item SPC-173 is to be kept in a locked container at all times. When personnel must enter SCP-173's container, no fewer than 3 may enter at
any time and the door is to be relocked behind them. At all times, two persons must maintain direct eye contact with SCP-173 until all personnel have vacated and relocked the container.
Description: Moved to Site19 1993. Origin is as of yet unknown. It is constructed from concrete and rebar with traces of Krylon brand spraypaint. SCP-173 is animate extremely hostile.
The object cannot move while within a direct line of sight. Line of sight must not be broken at any time with SCP-173. Personnel assigned to enter container are instructed to alert one another before blinking.
Object is reported to attack by snapping the neck at the base of the skull, or by strangulation. In the event of an attack, personal are to observe Class 4 hazardous object containment procedures.

Personnel report sounds of scraping stone originating from within the container when no one is present inside. This is considered normal, and any change in this behaviour should be reported to the acting HMCL supervisor on duty.

The reddish brown substance on the floor is a combination of feces and blood. Origin of these materials is unknown. The enclosure must be cleaned on a bi-weekly basis."

USAF File: C203-92b
Date: Jun 7, 1952

Filed by: Capt. Henry Milan
----

Item found outside of Yuma, Arizona on March 24th.

During regular training exercises, Corporal Ben Flynn and his squadron came across an strange statue in an empty installation set to be used for future bombing run training. The statue is approximately seven feet tall and human in form. The arms and legs are disproportionate to the head and torso, resembling a fetus. Strange colouration was noted on the face of the statue and it was posed against on of the inner walls of the building. Upon further inspection, Corporal Flynn noted that the statue is composed of mostly cement and is possibly reinforced with steel rebar. It is likely man-made.

Further investigation of the surrounding area yielded no other signs of transportation for the statue other that misshapen foot prints. It is likely that the statue was placed there by locals looking to create a stir or possibly protest the war. Private Allen Benson took the supplied photograph to document the area in the event that an investigation to the security of the training area is to take place.

Private Benson reported that he heard the sound of heavy scraping within the building shortly after he left. This prompted a search of the other rooms in case any civilians may have still been in the building but were undetected. The area was given an "all clear" by the squad commander and the statue was left in the building. It was deemed necessary that on June 9th, a final morning inspection of the building will be conducted before it is demolished to make certain that no civilians have returned to the area and to ensure no lives are lost.

Paranoia? Lack of Sleep?

I have just the remedy.

Let's say the Eye-contact rules apply to not only a physical encounter with this statue, or "SCP - 137" as it is called - but any kind of eye contact, be it a video or a picture.

Perhaps the blood and feces that appear on the floor in the containment block of this creature belong to the many victims that have seen the image of this creature over the internet, and other places - who have broken eye contact, being killed, and shitting themselves during the moment of attack.

Perhaps you should spend more time starting at the creature's eyes in the photo...

It could save your life.

Or maybe it's bullshit? Could be as much bullshit as the existance of this creature itself.

Is it always rational to say that some things, some stories, were made up to scare you?

Or maybe there's just a whole lot of scary shit in this world.

fucking stupid

OP here- I realize the entire story is bullshit- we all did (and do). We actually discussed this the night we were freaking out- and it was frustrating getting nervous over something so obviously fake. We eventually pinned it on the 'Uncanny Valley' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley) (I realize it isn't a robot, but humanoid in general), along with rampant imaginations. Maybe we're just bitches? I dunno- but the majority of people I've shown it to also get uneasy. It's just creepy.

This really isn't close enough to human to hit the uncanny valley. It's just large and weird-looking, vaguely fœtal with an insectoid face, and clearly not a scale model.

might be useful if someone wanted to make a short. probably begin with a group of young enlisted hearing the special procedures and not taking it seriously. have it require that at least 2 people do nothing but watch the statue. some argue its a test, others are totally paranoid, etc.
first group goes in and while cleaning the floor, the guy knocks the bucket over and everyone looks down at the bucket and then at each other. switch to outside shot and hear *crack* *crack* *crack*. next group goes in and finds the 3 guys on the floor with twisted necks. one should have a head facing the wrong way. and then...

Item#: SCP173 (aka "The Golem")

Special Containment Procedures: Item SPC173 is to be kept in a locked container at all times. When personnel must enter SCP173's container, no fewer than three (3) may enter at any time and the door is to be locked behind them. At all times, two persons must be looking at SCP173 until all personnel have vacated and relocked the container.

Description: Moved to Site 19 in 1993, little is known about item number SPC173's origins. It is constructed from concrete and rebar and was once painted with Krylon brand spray paint.

SCP173, more commonly known as "The Golem", is animate and malevolent, if given the chance it will kill anyone within it's line of sight. However, its weakness is that it does not move while being watched. Despite this paralysis it is still highly dangerous; able to cover at least two (2) meters in the literal blink of an eye. While left alone in it's room, one can hear a stone-on-stone scraping from within that is believed to be the sound of the SCP173 moving about.

The reddish brown substance on the floor is a combination of feces and blood. All DNA testing has proved inconclusive thus far. We do not know (nor wish to find out) where it comes from or how it arrives, but SCP173's container will slowly fill with these substances. In order to ensure that bacterial growth within does not begin to damage the building it is contained within, and to maintain some level of sanitation, the enclosure must be cleaned on a bi-weekly basis.

Of course it's fake. This picture/story combination still freaks me out more than anything else on /x/ though. Clearly, the addition of 'nor do we wish to find out' bit was retarded, but the specification of minimum known speed is important, because when you bother to calculate known eye blink time and the distances given, the figure is 720 kph. Accelerating to and stopping from that speed in a fraction of a second. I guess I just find the combination of a clearly solid and present physical object that doesn't follow the laws of physics, rather obeying laws dictated by human perception. It implies that the way we understand the world to work is wrong; that rather than we being observers of a clearly defined external world, our observation is genuinely significant and intrinsic to the process. That a tree falling in a forest would not make a sound.

By denying the very basis of our knowledge, it creates a kind of insane, Lovecraftian sort of doubt about whether we actually have any power whatsoever. It creates fear of the unknown by implying that we don't know how things work at all.
