Lead 1: the town where I'm staying, Pasir Ris, has a nearby seashore where long ago, Chinese civilians were executed by Japanese soldiers during the Occupation in World War II.
Lead 2: Pulau Tekong, an offshore Island, is where young boys train to be men and soldiers. many ghost stories take place on that island, including this one:
"My father's instructor once went to take a dump in the bushes out in the jungle. The superstition of the times indicated that the man had to tell the spirits to leave the area before taking a dump. However, when he did tell the spirits to leave as such, a voice from 'nowhere' said, 'CANNNOT!' in a Chinese dialect and the instructor fainted in fright. It took several people to carry the poor guy back into camp."
Of course, the voice that said "CANNOT!" in Hokkien turned out to be the platoon joker, who wanted to scare the sergant.
Also, other ghost stories are tied to all our NS camps, from the ghosts of recruits haunting our bunks, to spirits from the graveyard scaring those poor prowlers on night guard.
Lead 3: Taxi drivers tend to share ghost stories about ferrying ghosts back to the graveyards where their bodies were buried. There's a story about a taxi driver who was given a winning lottery number by the ghost of his ancestor, whom he ferried back to the site of his old graveyard.
Lead 4: Some ghosts are said to haunt cinemas. They come out to 'play' after the movie-goers leave, causing superstitious theater cleaners to shit bricks.
