Hey /x/. I've recently been considering making a game based around creepypasta, particularly the holders series. It'll most likely be text based, as I suck at graphics, whether drawn by hand or on the computer.

However, before I actually started doing any work on said game, I thought I'd post my idea here. If there's no general interest, I probably wont bother. And if there's a fair bit, then I'll give it my best shot.

Anyway, that aside. If you DO think it's a good idea, please post things you'd like to see referenced in game, or actual aspects of the game itself.

For example, do you have a particular favourite creepypasta that you'd really want to see in? Post it here. Want the game to have an experience/money/whatever system? Ask for it. Anyone advice on programming is also appreciated. For the record, I'll most likely be making this in Visual Basic, as that's the programming language I'm most fluent in.

So. Anyone interested? And if so, any tips/ideas? And this is probably a terrible idea, but if anyone wants to contact me personally and discuss ideas on a more one-to-one basis, my MSN is nicb0nson@hotmail.com. I'm available most days, but bear in mind I'm from England, so I may be on at slightly unusual times if you're from anywhere else.

Oh. And pic unrelated. Sorry about that.

I think that'd be pretty cool, although the graphics/sound/ambience is what would really make a Holders game. Otherwise, I think it'd just be like reading the creepypasta in a smaller window.

This may be impossible in a Text based game, but an effect similar to Eternal Darkness's Sanity meter would be awaesome.

Every four minutes someone decides not to make a /x/ related video game, but to make a topic about one.

But hey, I could be wrong. I'm a composer and could help with an original soundtrack or I could create ambiance. I also have recording equipment so I could gather some people together for voice-acting parts.

Interesting idea, I suppose sanity could be put in as a variable, decreasing when you encounter something creepy, and increasing.. Somehow. Or not. The entire object of the game could involve seeing how long you can keep your sanity.. I'll have to think on that. Good idea, though.

You could be right, you could be wrong. I'd really like to make an /x/ related game.. I never expected music or voice acting though

Read about Call of Cthulhu RPG, it have sanity related events and ideas.

Also, I'm not sure if I want to play another text-based adventure. Maybe something like 'Uninvited', but plain text-based isn't something I'm really into

Alright, I'll look into that. Thank you.

one /x/ game would be pretty nice, but text-based games, good heavens, we're on 2008 hello

you MUST insert something about a suspicious nigra face appearing in the corner of a basement.

I would advise you to play some of the creepier games in the IF genre. Vespers, Distress, Anchorhead, etc. Those are all I can think of at the moment.

Also, if you're going to code an interpreter by your self in Visual Basic, see if there are any pre-built ones in VB that you can build off of.

I think it'd be cool if you had some effects on the text. For instance, have some flickers every once in a while, have the text slowly change colors at some points in the game. If the character becomes trapped in a dark room, have all the text be hidden by darkness, except for some text that is under the light.

Just stuff like that. Be real subtle, and then when it counts you can do some crazy shit and scare the hell out of the player.

And whoever does the soundtrack needs to listen to a lot of dark ambient/minimalism/noise, for inspiration.

Seconded.

>>554178

Haha, maybe.

>>554188

IF? Anyway.. I like the ideas about the text, I'll see what I can do. I'll look into the interpreter idea, and I've already met someone interested in helping with the soundtrack.

To everyone, thanks so far. I'll get to work.

ooh, make sure you get that one in with the Albino ghosts with Red eyes that that guy unknowingly had staring at him when he peeked through a keyhole.

Seconded.

Haha, I knew that one would come up at some point. I'll do my best

Actually, now that I think about it, it would be awesome to make a d20 game or a DnD campaign based on the Holders series.

I agree, a game on the holders series would be really cool, maybe the op could also throw in something from the scp series as well? For those who have not heard of the SCP series I highly recommend reading it at http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series

The SCP series, much like The Holders, started out well and was then promptly dickhammered into the ground by fags
>> Anonymous
>>554360

The only really bad one of the Holders series I remember was the 'Holder of Silence'. It doesn't even make sense really.
>> Anonymous
I was going to do this too, but I failed. Good luck, anon.
>> Anonymous
>>554356

SCP series mixed with the Holders... the SCP personnel could be antagonists, trying to get all the holders' objects to prevent them from coming together... this has the chance of becoming quite good if you do it right...

Hm, I rather like the sound of that. I'd have to throw in a few other bits of Creepypasta too of course, but that does sound like a pretty good idea.

Still, there's something I need to ask about. Namely - Game mechanics. How do you want this game to function /x/? My original thought was you start off in your apartment, and can do various things from there (Such as rest in your apartment to regain health, go and explore the city etc.) But as I said, that was just an initial idea and I'm open to suggestions. For example, experience system and levels, yes or no? Money system? Time/date system? (Mainly for the creepypasta that say something to the effect of 'If you do X at Y time and date, something happens!')

If you think these ideas suck, tell me. Preferably with an alternative.

IF, as in Interactive Fiction, aka Text Adventures.

Aha! Thank you.

I've given that article a read.. That wasn't quite how I was intending it to be, partly because I wouldn't know how to build an interpreter like that..

What I had in mind is fairly hard to explain.. I'd have to make a quick example, and post it so you'd have some idea of what I had in mind, then tell me how I'm doing it wrong.
>> Anonymous
so by text based do you mean like zork running out of cmd? or something else that you could explain to us?
>> Anonymous
>>554630

Hm, the idea I had in mind was something along the lines of you start off in your apartment (As I think I said) and you have multiple options for things you can do, (Say for example, sleep, go earn money, or go exploring), if you go exploring, you're presented with a map of the town/city/whatever that you're in, and in some places (Perhaps at certain times) then an event-type thing happens, whether it's a creepypasta related thing, or something else.

I'd hope to put in some of the creepypasta where, if you pull it off correctly, you get something beneficial, be it an Object or something else.. Of course, creepypasta with negative effects would have to be involved too, or there'd be no fun..

I'm.. Not particularly good at explaining things as you can probably tell. Sorry about that.

np I got what you are trying to explain, it sounds so far like it will be interesting

I'm not thread OP, but I'm the person who contacted him in regards to working with the sound.

Anyways, while he's been AFKing and jerking off to loli, I tossed together a rough sound-sketch and a couple ideas for the visual set up/atmosphere for the game.

I have noted the obnoxious game-maker banner and loading bar, but I haven't bothered to reinstall the cracked version yet because I frankly don't give a shit... this is OP's job. In the end product I envision the loading bar replaced with a translucent, emboldened white H crest.

Any key will take you to the next screen, ESC will close the 'game'.

Keep in mind, I just did this right now.

Additional note, I won't be around to respond to any critique because I'm going to bed.

If this sparks any more interest, you can contact me on msn at the.other.violent.femme@hotmail.com and the OP at nicb0nson@hotmail.com.

QUICK somebody open it on their computer. My limit's up for megaupload.

Wasn't there a thread like this with the same post and everything a few months back?

mediafire or rapidshare please, megaupload is a bitch

OP here. I deny the accusation that I was jerking off to loli.

I was reading the SCP series, so I'd actually have some idea what they are if I'm going to be using 'em in game.

..That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

OP here, just thought I'd add that seeing as its' now being made using Game Maker, GMaker or whatever the program's actually called instead of VB, it wont be purely text based anymore.

Anyone have any particularly good creepy images (Preferably not mindfucks) that you think would be appropriate? If you do, post 'em here. Or add me on MSN and send them my way, my address is in the thread twice already. Please don't just send me emails, my junk filter is set to 'exclusive' and I don't check my junk folder that often.
