The Cradle from Thief 3, (one of the most brix shitting experiences of all times), I should point out that there are a lot of terrific fan missions for thief 2, some of which are better than the original game, and many of which are unbeleivably brix shitting.

http://www.keepofmetalandgold.com/
http://thiefmissions.com/

Both spots to grab plenty of the missions. You need some extra stuff, Darkloader (can get everything you need at the Keep of Metal and Gold)

Brawl in the Tombs
Island of Iron parts 1 & 2
What Lies Below
Deceptive Perception
Benny's Dead
The Inverted Manse

All great missions. Deceptive Perception will traumatize you, and the Inverted Manse is one of the most consistantly creepy levels I've played for any game (fan made or not). It compares with the cradle from thief 3, but does come up short in terms of sheer gut wrenching terror.

Deserving special mention though, is Calendra's Legacy, a 350 meg 3-level fan made mission pack that just blows the shit out of major releases in terms of sheer quality entertainment.
The second mission is all about zombies too.

Worth playing if you like the thief series, or don't mind slow-paced cereberal gameplay from time to time.

John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons
"I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons" he shouted
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons"
And then John was a zombie.

Bioshock has an insanely creepy and intense atmosphere.

The part that really makes me shit bricks is in the garden area - you walk into a room that's a dead end, you hear voices but don't know where they're coming from - then you turn around and BANG!! a "wizard splicer in a scary mask is standing there.

It was freaky as hell in the beginning, especially the first 1 or 2 times you meet a Big Daddy, but once you get a few good weapons it was like god mode was turned on and everything ceased to be scary. Okay, so you are dropped off in front of a mine shaft. It's flooded. No big deal, you can swim. You swim through it and find yourself in a dimly lit factory addition of a mine. There is a body in front of you. Flies buzz around it, and you move on. You come to a wide cavern, with a cut slowly winding up. There are a few more bodies in there, You walk by them like nothing is out of the ordinary, when RRRRRRRRRAAAAAWR ONE OF THOSE MOTHER FUCKERS GOT UP! YOU SWING YOUR SWORD AT IT, BUT IT DOESN'T FUCKIN KILL IT! THE OTHER ONES GET UP, AND REAP YOUR SOUL FOR THEIR UNDEAD GOD!

You shut your computer off, and crawl up into the corner of your room, whimpering.

Stalker is dripping with atmosphere and it's scary too because you aren't some superhuman that just runs around killing a bunch of monsters. Getting ambushed by a bloodsucker in the middle of the night and having your gun jam is scary is the scary you're familiar with in games like Doom 3, but those fuckers don't just keep attacking you until they die, they disappear and stalk you from a distance, then the second you lose track of them they jump you again.

I found System Shock 2 to be insanely scary.

The feeling of being totally alone in a vast city size ship, with little ammo or knowledge of your enemy.

Are there any games that put you in a large, open area, and then put an antagonist in the same area, and let you feel hunted.

That would be an awesome shitting bricks game.

I was thinking of putting a really powerful dark character down in Oblivion somewhere, that just walks around the game world (outside of cities) and when you come across him, you better be ready.
>> Anonymous
>>878608
Id say Manhunt but ... no. Haunting Ground does that to you, but because its not the same style as System Shock, Im not so sure you'd like it as much. Resident Evil 3 is also like that but .. its Resident Evil, so its more action than horror.

Siren is also like that, but because its always dark (you rely on a flashlight) the areas dont come off as huge, but they are.
